Why Do Some Split Pressure Solar Water Heaters Perform Poorly?

Last November, a customer in Belgium called us frustrated: his newly installed solar heater worked fine in September but now delivered lukewarm water even on sunny days. We asked a few questions and quickly pinpointed the issue-not the collector, but a 12-meter copper pipe running through an unheated garage with barely any insulation. By the time hot water reached the tank, it had lost 18°C.

This isn't rare. After troubleshooting over 200 European installations, we've found most "poor performance" cases trace back to four avoidable issues:

1. The "cheap glycol" trap

Many suppliers cut costs by using low-grade propylene glycol that thickens below -5°C. Result? Sluggish circulation, reduced heat transfer, and, in harsh winters, frozen loops. We've seen systems in Poland fail not from cold but from viscous fluid that couldn't pump.

2. Tank shortcuts that bite back

Some factories use 304 stainless steel for all markets-even coastal areas. Six months near the Mediterranean, and chloride pitting starts. Others skip double-welding tank seams to save 3 minutes per unit. That tiny gap? It leaks after 18 months of thermal cycling.

3. Oversized collectors, undersized tanks

A Dutch installer once told us he specified a massive 4 m² collector for a family of three-thinking "more is better." Reality: the small 150L tank overheated daily in summer, triggering safety valves and wasting energy. Balanced sizing matters more than raw collector area.

4. Installation blind spots

No matter how good the hardware, poor installation kills performance: pipes running parallel to cold water lines (heat theft), collectors tilted at roof pitch instead of optimal angle, or air trapped in loops reducing flow by 40%.

The truth? Most failures aren't mysterious-they're predictable. At DELAN, we now include a one-page "European Climate Checklist" with every shipment: glycol type by region, minimum pipe insulation thickness, and even local installer contacts in 12 countries. Because a great heater shouldn't depend on perfect installation-it should forgive small mistakes and still deliver hot water on a gray January morning.

That Belgian customer? We sent him 8 meters of pre-slit insulation foam and a 10-minute video. His water temperature jumped 15°C overnight. No parts replaced. Just attention to what really matters.
