What is a solar heater?

  • Integral Collector-Storage (ICS) Systems: ICS systems consist of a storage tank that is integrated with the solar collector. The water in the tank is heated directly by the sun and then flows into the building's plumbing system when hot water is needed.   • Thermosyphon Systems: Thermosyphon systems use the natural tendency of hot water to rise and cold water to sink to circulate water through the solar collectors and into the storage tank. These collectors are typically used in large-scale solar power plants and are not commonly used in residential solar water heating systems.
  • Storage Tank: The storage tank stores the heated water until it is needed. It is usually insulated to reduce heat loss and may be equipped with a backup heating element (such as an electric or gas heater) to ensure a continuous supply of hot water, especially during periods of low sunlight.
  • Pumps and Controls: In an active solar water heating system, pumps are used to circulate the fluid through the solar collectors and into the storage tank. Controls are used to monitor and regulate the operation of the system, such as turning the pumps on and off based on the temperature of the fluid in the collectors and the storage tank.
  • Heat Exchanger: In an indirect active system, a heat exchanger is used to transfer the heat from the heat-transfer fluid to the water in the storage tank. The heat exchanger is typically made of copper or stainless steel and is designed to maximize the transfer of heat while minimizing the loss of energy.
